Cycle Training 2020 #30

Week beginning July 19th, 2020

Posting progress prevenient to the usual day as I won’t be able to cycle tomorrow because of Tropical Storm (as at time of writing) Hanna. So 62 miles for the week even although I missed Thursday and Saturday.

7th month of the year and I thought I’d check on my progress. There is no word yet from H.E.B. or The Chamber of Commerce regarding the fate of Conquer the Coast 2020, other than a “save the date” graphic on Facebook (9/12/2020), so I fear that it will not be going ahead this year. However I continue to train – just in case. 🚴

Following advice from KiiiTV …

The morning Facebook Live broadcast from Alan Holt included the information that the heat index would rise to three figures by 1PM.
Also, he provided a new word for our vocabulary, “albedo” which is the amount of solar radiation an object reflects. His point was: “wear light colored clothing and spend 5 minutes in the shade drinking water for every 20 minutes outdoor activity.” I took his advice and frankly appreciated it.

Because of this information I split my cycling between morning and evening to cover a total of 27.85 miles for the day – and I survived!

Why? As I start week #25

Why? As I start week #25

This is what it’s all about, COVID-19 permitting.

In 2017 I had intended to enter the Conquer the Coast cycling event but it was cancelled due to Hurricane Harvey.
In 2018 there had been so much bad weather that the largely coastal 66 mile event was cancelled due to flooding on the route.
In 2019 I was finally able to realize my ambition to cycle over the Harbor Bridge. Maybe I’ll manage to do so again in 2020.

It’s an all day deal; you need to average at least 10 mph to stay in the event so I was very lucky that Cousin Ray volunteered to accompany me on this venture. He stayed with me throughout the day and I’m pretty sure I would not have made it without his encouragement.
